The different types of walkers and rollators
Walkers and rollators are mobility aids that allow the user to stay on their feet. There are 4 main types of walkers and rollators, and today we'll provide a brief summary of each.
Walking Frames
Walking Frames have either 0 or 2 wheels, and are for indoor use. The user lifts up and re-places the frame with each step, or simply slides it across the floor. They are a good option if the user requires lots of stability and doesn't intend to move too far.
Price range: $119-$345
Rollators
A rollator is similar to a walking frame, except it has 4 wheels. The user rolls the rollator along while walking. Most of them also incorporate a seat and a bag, which makes them ideal for trips to the shops.
There are two types of rollators: A-frame rollators and X-frame rollators. A-frames fold front to back and are typically much cheaper. X-frame rollators fold side to side, and are often made from more expensive materials like carbon fibre.
In both instances the folding mechanism is quite simple, and the result is an easy-to-lift, easy-to-transport mobility aid.
Price range: $220-800
Upright Rollator
An upright rollator is very similar to normal rollator, except rather than being operated with handles at roughly hip height, they have forearm rests at chest height. This makes the rollator overall a bit clumsier to operate, but is recommended for those who really need the posture support.
Price range: $400-$600
Hybrid Rollator
A hybrid rollator combines a rollator with a wheelchair. It can be used from behind, standing up, but the seat is suitable for sitting in and being pushed by an attendant. As a compromise between the two, you don't get the best of either world, but it is recommended for those who still want to walk, but who can only manage to do so for a portion of their expeditions.
Motorised hybrids also exist, which remove the need for an attendant to push the user. They also feature motorised breaking for slopes when using the rollator functionality.
Price range: $350-$550 (manual hybrid), $2000-$3000 (motorised hybrid)
